Indoor shooting range renovation with structural upgrades and ballistic system preparation in Lorton, Virginia

Indoor Range Renovation

Demolition, structural upgrades, and range modernization

Shooting Range Renovation & System Preparation – Lorton, VA

Overview

This project involved a comprehensive renovation and preparation of an existing indoor shooting range facility in Lorton, Virginia. East Coast Installation Group was contracted to remove outdated range systems and perform structural and concrete upgrades in preparation for the installation of new, modern target retrieval equipment.

The work focused on safely dismantling existing infrastructure, improving ballistic protection, and upgrading downrange surfaces to support long-term durability, safety, and improved range performance.

Planning

Extensive planning was required to coordinate demolition, structural improvements, and concrete work while maintaining safety and efficiency within an active range environment. The project scope was carefully sequenced to allow for the orderly removal of existing systems and preparation for new equipment installation by others.

Key planning considerations included:

  • Coordination with range management on removal priorities

  • Sequencing of demolition and construction activities

  • Material salvage and reuse, where applicable

  • Preparation for third-party equipment installation

Regulatory Compliance

All work was performed with careful consideration of applicable safety standards, construction requirements, and best practices associated with indoor shooting range environments.

Compliance considerations included:

  • Safe removal and handling of ballistic materials

  • Structural work aligned with accepted construction standards

  • Proper preparation of concrete surfaces for new overlays

Construction Process

The project was executed in multiple controlled phases to ensure quality, safety, and readiness for subsequent equipment installation.

  • System Removal: Existing target track and cable systems, retrievers, and shooting booths were removed along with associated hardware and electronics.

  • Structural Upgrades: Existing ballistic steel was removed where necessary, and new CMU wall construction was completed to enhance downrange structural integrity.

  • Concrete Improvements: Existing concrete surfaces were cleaned, prepared, and overlaid with high-strength concrete to provide a durable, level foundation from the firing line to the bullet trap.

  • Ballistic Enhancements: New AR500 steel panels were installed on upgraded CMU walls to improve projectile containment and durability.

Maintenance and Upkeep

Upon completion, the facility was positioned for long-term operational reliability and simplified future maintenance.

Maintenance considerations included:

  • Improved accessibility for future system servicing

  • Durable concrete and ballistic materials designed for extended service life

  • Preparation for future equipment upgrades and modernization

Conclusion

The successful completion of this range renovation project in Lorton, Virginia, demonstrates East Coast Installation Group’s expertise in large-scale indoor range modernization. By safely removing legacy systems and implementing structural and concrete upgrades, the facility was fully prepared for the installation of new target retrieval equipment and continued high-volume use.
