Commercial Indoor Range Renovation
Target retrieval system replacement, ballistic baffle upgrades, and Dura-Panel installation
Commercial Indoor Range Renovation
Indoor Range Renovation – West Chester Township, OH
Overview
This project involved a major renovation of an existing commercial indoor shooting range in West Chester Township, Ohio. East Coast Installation Group removed the existing target retrieval equipment and portions of the existing overhead ballistic system before installing ten new electronic target retrievers and upgrading the range's ballistic protection with new Dura-Panel coverage.
The completed renovation modernized the target system while improving overhead ballistic protection and extending the service life of the existing range infrastructure.
Planning
Because this was a renovation of an existing range, careful coordination was required to integrate the new equipment with the facility's existing infrastructure. The new target retrieval system was designed to utilize existing mounting locations where possible while the ballistic upgrades were incorporated into the existing baffle system.
Key planning considerations included:
Removal and preservation of existing equipment for reuse elsewhere
Integration of new target retrieval tracks with existing mounting locations
Preparation of existing baffles for new ballistic panel installation
Maintaining proper clearances throughout the target retrieval and baffle systems
Coordinating installation across all ten shooting lanes
Regulatory & Safety Considerations
All work was performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and recognized best practices for indoor shooting range ballistic systems.
Safety considerations included:
Maintaining proper ballistic coverage across the range
Secure installation of overhead equipment and target retrieval tracks
Proper preparation and adhesion of new ballistic panels
Verification of existing mounting and suspension locations
Maintaining required clearances between range components
Construction / Installation Process
The renovation was completed in phases, beginning with removal of the existing equipment and preparation of the range for the new systems.
Existing System Removal: Removed ten lanes of existing target retrievers and track, with equipment broken down and palletized for the owner.
Overhead Preparation: Removed portions of the existing wood, plywood, and insulation assemblies to prepare the overhead ballistic system for renovation.
Target Retrieval Installation: Installed ten new electronic target retrieval systems across the range.
Baffle Upgrades: Installed new Dura-Panel ballistic protection across seven rows of existing baffles, including full and partial coverage based on the system design.
System Integration: Utilized existing mounting locations where applicable to integrate the new equipment with the existing range infrastructure.
Maintenance and Upkeep
The upgraded range was designed for continued commercial use with accessible components that can be inspected and serviced as part of routine range maintenance.
Maintenance considerations include:
Routine inspection of target retrieval tracks, hangers, and drive components
Inspection of Dura-Panel surfaces for wear and projectile damage
Periodic inspection of overhead baffles and mounting hardware
Replacement of ballistic panels as wear develops in higher-impact areas
Scheduled inspection and servicing of electronic target retrieval equipment
Conclusion
This renovation transformed an aging range with a new electronic target retrieval system and upgraded overhead ballistic protection while making use of the facility's existing infrastructure where practical.
The finished range combines modern target controls with renewed ballistic protection, providing a cleaner, updated system built for continued commercial use.
